About TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Chemicals)

Volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) are common in the indoor environment. There sources are numerous and include indoor furnishings; new construction materials; science, art, and shop supplies; pesticides; personal care products; air fresheners; cleaning supplies; cooking, office equipment such as copiers and printers, and numerous others. Excessive chemical levels may produce undesirable odors and irritation. Common symptoms include eye, nose, throat irritation and headaches. If levels are high and prolonged, more significant effects may be experienced such as fatigue, nausea, and dizziness.

Typical indoor air contains hundreds of individual VOCs. The sum of all of these VOCs are measured and presented as the total volatile organic chemical level or TVOC. This TVOC level, in return, can be used to determine whether or not chemical levels are elevated in a space.

When should I test?

  • Allergies, asthma or upper respiratory irritation persist
  • Eye, ear, nose, throat irritation
  • Frequent headaches, dizziness, or odors
  • Nausea and fatigue that appear building related
  • Newly constructed or renovated home, building or office area
  • Installation of new furnishings such as furniture and textiles
  • Persistent odors
  • Quality check on building's IAQ acceptance

    How is the test conducted?

The test kit will provide you with a special air monitor that will collect airborne VOCs. The monitor is removed from the kit, uncapped and hung in an area of concern for a 5-7 day period. Frequent areas tested include bedrooms, living rooms, offices, office cubicles, kitchens, conference rooms, classrooms, science laboratories, copy rooms, libraries, and cars. After the test period, the monitor is removed, capped, and sent back to AQS' accredited chemical laboratory for specialized chemical analysis.

What type of report will I receive?

Within 5 days of the kit arriving back to the laboratory, a report will be sent to you listing the level of TVOC found and illustrating how it compares to current standards and guidelines. The results will indicate your risk level from exposure and provide guidance on controlling levels.
