Stachybotrys Test Kit

Source: Air Quality Sciences, Inc.
Easy to use, self-administered kit with return envelope
Molds are a frequent cause of allergies and asthma attacks. Although most molds are considered to be, at worse, allergenic, certain molds such as Stachybotrys chatarum produce toxins that can result in more significant health effects. Recent studies have shown that certain toxins released by molds can result in memory impairment to adults and children and potential pulmonary hemorrhaging in infants. Stachybotrys chatarum is a mycotoxin-producing mold that can grow on water-damaged materials such as wallboard, ceiling tile, insulation, wallpaper, wood, and paper product. Materials containing cellulose are more susceptible. Stachybotrys spores rarely become airborne, but their presence can be found in settled building dust or from the water damaged building materials.

How do I know if I should test?

  • The environment has a musty odor
  • Relative humidity in environment frequently exceeds 65%
  • Environment is excessively dusty
  • Environment is often warm and humid
  • There is obvious mold growth on building surfaces and materials
  • Interior surfaces such as wallboard, ceiling tile, thermal insulation, or wood have unknown dark discolorations.
  • Water damage to building has occurred

    How is the test conducted?

The test kit will provide you with a special dust collection bag, which fits your normal vacuum cleaner. Settled dust is collected from suspect areas of the environment. Typically, a composite dust sample is collected from the flooring, baseboards, and material surfaces. If a specific area is discolored, dust from that specific area can be collected. Dust can also be collected from within a wall cavity. The settled dust is sent back is sent back to AQS' AIHA accredited microbiology laboratory where the dust is cultured specifically for Stachybotrys.

What type of report will I receive?

After the dust has been cultured for Stachybotrys, the results will be reported back to you in a simple, easy to read test report. The results will indicate whether or not this specific type of mold is found. If it is found, guidance materials will be provided in handling this type of contamination.
