NEW MANUAL HELPS TO CREATE AN ISO 14001 EMS

How to Create and Implement an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS)

Is Explained In New ERM Guide Book

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/-- How to develop and implement an environmental management system (EMS) that conforms to the international ISO 14001 EMS standard is covered in detail in a new manual. Entitled ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems: A Complete Implementation Guide, the manual has been written by the environmental management specialists at Environmental Resources Management (ERM). ERM is a global environmental, health and safety consulting firm.

The comprehensive 800-page manual has been prepared specifically to guide the environmental, health and safety manager through the ISO 14001 implementation process. The ISO 14001 EMS standard, the core of the ISO 14000 series, presents the requirements an organization should meet in order to create an effective EMS, including the setting of goals and priorities, assignment of responsibility for accomplishing them, measuring and reporting on results, and external verification of claims.

"Even if your organization does not actually go through the ISO certification process, the discussion and support tools in the guide will assist the user in creating an effective EMS that will improve and add value to your organization's operations," said co-authors Anthony Saponara and Randy Roig of ERM's Walnut Creek, California, office.

"For those EHS managers seeking ISO 14001 certification," added Brian Kraus, managing director of ERM Certification and Verification Services, "the challenge is not simply to achieve certification but to make it work constructively for their companies. This means showing management how the ISO 14001 process leads to improved environmental management, better control of risks and regulatory compliance, reduced waste and other financial benefits."

Written by trained ISO 14001 assessors, the guide includes a chapter for each of the 17 clauses of the ISO 14001 standard. Each chapter consists of four parts:

-- The main chapter text, which presents a detailed discussion of the
specific requirements, techniques and approaches for successful system
development, as well as implementation tips regarding the actual
certification audit process.
-- A fictitious case study that describes the hands-on ISO 14001
implementation efforts of a large hotel and resort as they pursue ISO
certification.
-- Case samples that provide examples of procedures, programs and other
documentation associated with an ISO 14001 EMS.
-- Task lists summarizing the specific tasks necessary to implement an
EMS, according to the requirements of the specific ISO 14001 clause,
are provided at the end of each chapter.

Additional chapters include an overview of the ISO 14000 standards
and a "Getting Started" chapter that describes how to begin the EMS development process.

ISO 14001 EMS: A Complete Implementation Guide has been published for use worldwide. The Guide is provided in two three-ring binders, and quarterly updates are included.
