Montreal Unveils An Ambitious Plan To Achieve Its Climate Goals

Montreal, QC / PRNewswire / - The city of Montreal is pleased to unveil its 2020-2030 Climate Plan today. The plan, which consists of 46 concrete actions, will allow Montreal to achieve the ambitious climate objectives it has set for itself in terms of ecological transition, i.e. a 55% reduction in greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the region. community by 2030 (compared to 1990), as well as carbon neutrality for its activities by 2040 and for the community in 2050.

In September 2019, Montreal hosted a historic march that brought together 500,000 people calling for concrete actions to fight climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic has turned everything upside down. However, the year 2020 also highlighted the importance of having a resilient city on a human scale. A city that offers quality green spaces to its population. The planThe climate that we present will enable Montreal to improve the quality of life of its population in the short, medium and long term thanks to a revival that we want to be green and inclusive. The 2020-2030 Climate Plan includes 46 actions, including 16 key actions, grouped into five areas of intervention aimed at mobilizing the Montreal community, urban planning and development, buildings, the exemplary nature of the city and governance. Among the actions that will have the greatest impact, we can cite:

  • plant, maintain and protect 500,000 trees in priority areas sensitive to heat waves;
  • encourage sustainable mobility in neighborhoods and future urban developments, such as the Hippodrome site;
  • promote and increase the percentage of electric vehicles in the city center;
  • encourage greening and stimulate the densification of the city by converting it into an open-air car park;
  • adapt internal regulations and support programs to increase the energy efficiency and resilience of all types of buildings;
  • improve the energy performance of large buildings through a rating and disclosure system for their energy consumption and GHG emissions;
  • transform 100% of municipal real estate operations to be carbon neutral;
  • impose a climate assessment on all city decisions to limit their impact on GHG emissions and maximize their adaptation to climate change;
  • devote funds to adaptation to climate change, to the tune of 10 to 15% of the budget of the City of Montreal's Ten-Year Capital Works Program.
  • To monitor the progress of the plan and the achievement of its objectives, the city will publish an annual report on the progress made for each of the various actions it contains.
