Johnson Matthey Stationary Emissions Control (SEC) Expands Its Presence In China By Opening Sales And Marketing Office In Beijing
New Beijing Location Focusing on Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) Systems to Reduce NOx Emissions from Coal-Fired Power Plants
Malvern, PA - Johnson Matthey, the global leader in air emissions control, has expanded its presence in China with a new Stationary Emissions Control (SEC) sales and marketing office in Beijing that will mainly serve the power plant industry's growing demand for SCR catalysts.
In China, nearly 75% of power is generated by coal-fired power plants, which, in turn, generate more than 70% of the NOx emissions, resulting in high levels of ozone and acid rain. Although NOx regulations are not expected to be in place until 2011, many power companies have begun to purchase and install SCR Systems to control their NOx emissions.
Four of China's five largest power companies have their main offices in Beijing, reported Dr. Wolfgang Schüttenhelm, Director Power Plant Industries (PPI) for Johnson Matthey Catalysts (Germany) GmbH. "Our expansion of sales and marketing activities in China is part of our strategy to be a major supplier of SCR catalyst in this new and growing market."
Prior to opening the Beijing office, the company had been serving power plant applications solely from its offices in Shanghai. Holger Michaelis, General Manager of Johnson Matthey SEC's Chinese power plant business, said that, "Our new Beijing office allows us to be much closer to existing and potential new customers. Personal contacts are a key to success."
Major power companies located in Beijing include China Datang, Huadian, Huaneng and Guadian, along with their engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies, CDTE, CHEC and Longyuan.
"These are important to our PPI business," said Dr. Schüttenhelm. "Also, Babcock Wilcox Beijing, which has operations in Beijing and Harbin Boiler Works being better accessible from Beijing, are large boiler manufacturers with potential SCR business."
Johnson Matthey's Chinese Sales Director Peng Zhang will manage the office initially; Shuangqiang Zhang will serve as junior sales engineer. Michaelis said, " The Shanghai office will continue to coordinate Chinese sales, prepare and negotiate proposals and provide commissioning and installation services."
