Imerys Achieves Major Breakthrough Innovation Further Reducing The CO2 Footprint Of Synthetic Graphite1
Imerys Graphite and Carbon Switzerland Ltd. (IGC), a subsidiary of Imerys SA, today announces a major industrial breakthrough with its SU-NERGY graphite line: the world’s first industrial-scale graphite with a significantly reduced climate impact.
Made using biomass-based feedstock, this next-generation synthetic graphite targets a “Cradle-to-Gate” climate impact below 0.1 kg CO2e/kg. This advancement marks a significant milestone in the industrial-scale production of carbon materials and sets a new reference point for climate performance.
In 2025, Imerys Graphite and Carbon successfully introduced SU-NERGY, achieving up to 60% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to traditional synthetic graphite. Building on this milestone, the company has now further advanced its proprietary manufacturing technology at its cutting-edge facility in Bodio, Switzerland. By combining biomass residues and 100% low-carbon electricity, the new process further reduces the carbon footprint of synthetic graphite.
Premium performance, minimal CO₂ footprint
The latest SU-NERGY graphite maintains the technical performance of the previous generation while further reducing its carbon footprint. Its catalyst-free manufacturing process offers a lower-carbon solution for advanced mobility, energy storage, and other high-tech industries.
"When we launched the SU-NERGY series last year, we promised it was just the beginning of our journey to reshape the graphite landscape," said Frank Wittchen, Vice President & General Manager, Graphite & Carbon Division at Imerys. "This innovation serves as a crucial enabler for our customers. It helps them meet their decarbonization targets while securing a localized, resilient European supply chain."
The industrial-scale production of SU-NERGY graphite reflects Imerys' commitment to developing innovative solutions that address future industrial and environmental challenges, use alternative resources, and reduce the climate impact of its manufacturing processes.

1 Total climate change impact, measured from "cradle-to-gate", following ISO 14067 standards. Reduced climate change impact is achieved through partial replacement of fossil raw materials with CO2-sequestering biomass-based alternatives. To support immediate commercial scale-up, the climate impact for this product is modeled using primary process data from closely aligned production processes (SU-NERGY AGS and KS series). While these estimations accurately reflect our ecodesign parameters, an updated calculation will be published following full commercial validation.
