Etsy Becomes The First Global eCommerce Company To Completely Offset Carbon Emissions From Shipping

Brooklyn, NY /PRNewswire/ - Etsy, Inc., the global marketplace for unique and creative goods, today announced that it is becoming the first global ecommerce company to offset 100% of carbon emissions generated by shipping. Given the urgent need to fight climate change, Etsy is taking this immediate and actionable step as it continues to work towards long-term reduction solutions.

Now, each time someone buys an item on Etsy, the company will invest in various environmental projects, including protecting over 10 million trees and supporting wind and solar projects that create clean energy. This initiative comes at no additional cost to buyers or sellers. It simply comes with the satisfaction of knowing that shopping on Etsy means making a positive impact on the planet.

To jumpstart its efforts and celebrate the launch of its carbon-neutral shipping initiative, tomorrow (February 28), Etsy will also offset shipping emissions for the entire US ecommerce sector for the day. In the US alone, every day packages from online shopping travel the equivalent of to the moon and back approximately 133,000 times. This emits approximately 55,000 metric tons of CO2e into the atmosphere.[1] Offsetting this impact for one day is the equivalent of protecting 100 square miles of US forests for one year.[2]
