EPA Honors PPL Renewable Energy And Greater Lebanon Refuse Authority For Renewable Energy Project

Allentown, PA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has given the "Community Partner of the Year Award" to PPL Renewable Energy and the Greater Lebanon Refuse Authority for their joint efforts to raise awareness about the benefits of renewable energy.

PPL Renewable Energy partnered with the authority to develop and build an innovative educational facility as part of a 3.2-megawatt methane-to-energy power generation system in Lebanon, Pa.

This is the second PPL Renewable Energy project recognized by the EPA. A methane-to-energy power generation system in Manor Township, Pa., was named a "Project of the Year" in 2007.

In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and powering 2,500 homes with clean energy, the facility in Lebanon, Pa., hosts demonstration solar and wind power projects and includes an education room used by school groups and community organizations to learn more about renewable energy.

"Not only does the facility generate electricity from a renewable fuel, but it also helps to raise awareness in the community about the benefits of alternative energy," said Kurt Zwerko, vice president for PPL Renewable Energy. "This award recognizes the efforts of PPL Renewable Energy to work with our partners to develop projects that benefit the environment and the community."

The award was presented Thursday (1/10) in Washington, D.C., during the EPA's 11th Annual Landfill Methane Outreach Program Partner and Project of the Year Awards Ceremony.

PPL Renewable Energy already has developed renewable energy projects that total more than 30 megawatts of generation -- enough to power 20,000 homes. These include solar panel installations and landfill gas projects in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

In addition, PPL EnergyPlus purchases energy from the 24-megawatt Bear Creek wind farm near Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and the 26-megawatt Locust Ridge project in Mahanoy City, Pa. Other projects -- including new solar, landfill gas, wind and biomass -- are under development by PPL Renewable Energy.

PPL Renewable Energy, a subsidiary of PPL Corporation , develops, owns, operates and maintains renewable energy projects in the northeastern United States. The company will invest at least $100M in additional renewable energy projects in the next five years.
