BASF Coatings Successfully Completes Rollout Of Renewable Electricity Across European Production

  • Renewable electricity supply is a key lever for low-COproduction
  • Further expansion of energy-efficiency measures planned worldwide
  • Measures reduce Scope-2-emissions and improve the Product Carbon Footprint of coating solutions for customers

As part of its Carbon Management Roadmap, BASF Coatings has successfully completed the planned switch of its European production sites to electricity from renewable sources. At its French sites, the company will continue to rely on the country’s low-CO national power mix. This marks a key milestone in BASF Coatings’ sustainability strategy. At the same time, the company supports customers in the automotive industry and beyond in achieving their own climate and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) targets.

Using renewable electricity at BASF Coatings’ European plants is a central lever within a broader global package of measures aimed at reducing CO emissions. Together, these initiatives make a decisive contribution to lowering the company’s long-term production-related emissions. With this milestone achieved, BASF Coatings is continuing the transformation of its global production network. Selected sites in North America and Asia have already been switched to electricity from renewable sources as well.

“Completing the transition in our European production shows that we are pursuing our climate targets with consistency. By 2030, we aim to cut our specific CO emissions by 40 percent,” said Dr. Markus Piepenbrink, Head of Sustainability at BASF Coatings. “At the same time, using renewable energy lowers the Product Carbon Footprint of our coating solutions. This enables our customers to manufacture and launch products with a reduced CO footprint.”

Switching to renewable electricity significantly reduces Scope-2 emissions. In addition, energy- and material-efficiency measures enable further CO reductions across industrial value chains.
