The APCT Hydrocyclone Separator System works on a very simple principle
The APCT Hydrocyclone Separator System works on a very simple principle. The oily water is pumped tangentially into the hydrocyclone. This initiates a spinning vortex. This spinning vortex is accelerated as it moves down the tapered hydrocyclone, separating the heavier water phase to the outside walls while the lighter oil phase moves to the center. The separated oil is removed through a reject orifice located in the head section and the treated water discharges through the tail section. Optional solid removal component available.

The separator relies on centrifugal force and oleophilic forces, rather than gravitational forces for separation. The centrifugal force generated inside the vortex of the hydrocyclone is on the order of 1000 times the force of gravity. With such force even emulsified oil droplets can be separated. While heat does assist the hydrocyclone operation the tank temperture can be greatly reduced. This will save fuel and protect the heat sensitive OCM downstream of OWS.
