The full-scale High Efficiency Reverse Osmosis (HERO) system has been designed for treating industrial wastewater at a metals smelter. The system is virtually immune to fouling, according to the company, making RO for this application possible and practical.

This advancement in RO technology will achieve regulatory limits for all parameters, operating at a recovery of 95%; achieving a 20-fold reduction in waste volume and a concentrated brine containing 11.6% total dissolved solids. The process will eliminate membrane scaling and fouling while operating at a Silt Density Index (SDI) of 9.2.

Wastewater containing up to 20,000ppm Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and heavy metals can be treated to meet drinking water standards. Purified water from this system is normally suitable for reuse or direct discharge. Typical applications include:
•Produced water from oil and gas wells
•Cooling tower blowdown from chemical, petrochemical, power, and mineral processing industries
•Reduction of wastewater going to deep well injection
•Evaporator feed pre-concentration
•Zero liquid discharge
•Wastewater volume reduction
•Water reuse and conservation
•Wastewater treatment which cannot use traditional RO due to membrane fouling
•Water containing oil and grease, suspended solids and biological activity
