Coal-Fired Edgewater Station Cleared For Emissions Control Project

Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation, has received oral approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) to install additional emission control technology at the coal-fired Edgewater Generating Station Unit 5 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

“Edgewater Unit 5 has always been a strong and efficient energy source for WPL customers,” explained John Larsen, President – WPL. “Installing these additional emission controls positions it to continue that service and deliver on our environmental commitment as we transition our generating fleet to meet our customers’ energy needs in a safe, reliable and cost effective manner.”

Pending a written order from the PSCW, today’s decision authorizes WPL to install a scrubber and baghouse system, which will reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from Unit 5 by approximately 90%, with the co-benefit of significantly reducing emissions of fine particulate matter.

WPL expects to begin construction of the project in 2014 and place it in service in 2016. The estimated project cost approved by the PSCW is approximately $410 million excluding AFUDC. This project is expected to create as many as 400 jobs during peak construction.

Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), based in Madison, Wis., provides electric service to approximately 459,000 customers and natural gas service to approximately 180,000 customers in more than 600 communities across central and southern Wisconsin.
