BASF Commits To Ten-Year Goals To Promote Sustainable Agriculture

  • Reduce CO2 emissions per ton of crop produced by 30% .
  • - Bringing digital technologies to more than 400 million agricultural hectares.
  • - Ensure the safe use of BASF products by promoting responsible and appropriate management in line with good agricultural practices.

Mexico City / PRNewswire / - BASF's Agriculture Solutions division is committed to clear and measurable goals to promote increasingly sustainable agriculture by 2030. Focusing on its capacity for innovation, the The company will help farmers achieve a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions per ton of crop produced, as well as committing to increase its offer of solutions that contribute significantly to sustainability by 7% per year.

Furthermore, BASF will bring digital technologies to more than 400 million hectares of agricultural land and will continue to ensure the safe use of its products through good agricultural practices. The new commitments are further strengthened with the implementation of BASF's strategy in agriculture, launched in 2019.

"Agriculture is critical to the well-being of the world. In the coming decades, our food production system will undergo accelerated transformation to provide sufficient access to healthy and accessible food for a rapidly growing world population. At the same time, we will need to mitigate its impact on our planet. That transformation is driven by the call for better productivity: production that is recognized as valuable to society and the environment, while helping to generate sources of employment and income, "said Vincent Gros., President of BASF's Agriculture Solutions division. "With our solutions, we support farmers around the world to do the most valuable work on earth, so we can jointly create a positive impact on the agricultural food system."

Smart agriculture in the face of climate challenges
BASF will support farmers to become more carbon efficient and resilient to changing climatic conditions through technologies that enable them to increase productivity, make agricultural management more effective and reduce environmental impact. Those technologies include:

  • Nitrogen management products, such as Vibelsol ® and Vizura ® , which reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Crop protection products, such as the herbicide Kixor ® that allow farmers to produce without tillage, reducing CO2 emissions from the soil and the use of diesel.
  • New crop varieties, such as InVigor ® canola seeds , which provide greater stability to productivity, especially in adverse weather conditions.
  • Biological inoculants and innovative digital solutions.

At the same time, the company is exploring ways to incentivize CO2 efficiency and generate new production lines for farmers. With these products and solutions, BASF will help reduce CO2 emissions per ton of crop produced by 30% .

Sustainable solutions
BASF's goal is to increase the number of sustainable solutions it provides to farmers year after year. In this way, the company continually invests in its solid portfolio of Research and Development innovations, systematically guided by sustainability criteria. It contains solutions that promote the efficient use of resources and reduce the environmental footprint. Some examples are:

  • Solutions based on the fungicide Revysol ® , which allow increasing wheat productivity by 4%, allowing the farmer to protect the natural habitat.
  • The targeted application of Biosolutions, such as RAK ® pheromones , which interrupt the mating of certain moths, protecting the crop throughout its entire cycle, as part of integrated pest management.
  • Plant breeding innovations like Pingo Doce ® watermelon that help consumers avoid food waste.

Furthermore, BASF evaluates its entire product portfolio under clearly defined sustainability criteria validated by third parties, using the Sustainable Solution Steering method . Accelerator products contribute significantly to the sustainability of the value chain and will make a major contribution to the BASF Group's goal of 22 billion euros in sales by 2025. The Agriculture Solutions division aims to increase its share of sales of Accelerators products by 7% each year.

Digital Agriculture
Digitization can contribute to more efficient and sustainable agriculture. Thus, BASF will help farmers with digital tools to expand their businesses more profitably and, at the same time, reduce their environmental footprint. The use of digital technologies enables farmers to produce more with less, streamlining agricultural processes from monitoring in the field to the food supply chain. Xarvio ™ digital products, BASF's Digital Agriculture brand, allow more precise application of crop protection products and provide recommendations for nutrient management.

Digital tools are being adopted by an increasing number of farmers. In this way, they increase knowledge and awareness about agricultural sustainability. BASF seeks to bring digital technologies to more than 400 million hectares of agricultural land by 2030.

Responsible management * Smart stewardship
BASF is committed to safety to protect human health and the environment by promoting responsible and proper management of its products in line with good agricultural practices. The company provides access to safe handling tools and services that are tailored to each farmer's daily work. Those tools include protective gear, personalized training, digital solutions and new future-oriented application technologies, such as drones, which reduce work time and minimize potential exposure to pesticides. Initiatives using drones have already been launched in China and Colombia.

Another example of BASF's ongoing effort to make the handling of crop protection products easier and safer is the closed "easyconnect" transfer system. The system was developed in collaboration with other partners and is supported by key players in the agricultural industry. Its launch on the European market is planned in 2021/22.
