Vigilent Successfully Reduces Carbon Emissions, Employee Waist Sizes, And Commuting Barriers

Technology isn’t the only innovation emerging from Silicon Valley these days. Vigilent^®, an energy management company located in the San Francisco East Bay, announced the results of a unique wellness program that ties additional stock option grants to healthier lifestyle choices. Combined with a range of benefits and employee-oriented flexible work options, which include strong support for telecommuting, this has made the cool technology company a hot place to work.

Launched almost two years ago, the ‘Healthy Options” wellness program has paid dividends to the company via increased productivity and reduced absenteeism, and to employees through additional stock grants and rewards. To date, as a direct result of the program, Vigilent reports that it has tripled its  (defined as physically fit and of normal weight) – with more than 90 percent of employees participating in the program, which includes health screening, training, coaching and group support.

Twenty percent of Vigilent employees take Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) or walk to work at least twice a week. Employees are encouraged to telecommute when it makes sense and, with the company’s support as a Telework Week champion, around 25 percent of employees telecommuted at least one day this week.
