U.S. Mayors Curbing Greenhouse Gases And Adapting Cities To Climatic Events, According To 282-City Survey To Be Released Earth Day

USCM Survey Release: Tuesday, April 22 at 2:15 p.m. EDT

Washington /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ - The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) will release a mayoral survey of actions taken by cities throughout the U.S. to reduce greenhouse gases and adapt city infrastructure and systems to climatic events. The report findings, based on information provided by more than 280 cities, will be highlighted on Earth Day – Tuesday, April 22nd at 2:15 p.m. EDT – during a national CONFERENCE CALL with reporters, led by the Conference of Mayors' climate leaders.

According to the survey, many local climate initiatives are the result of the nearly-decade old campaign to reduce city greenhouse gas emissions, whereby mayors committed to local climate action by joining as a signatory to the Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement (http://www.usmayors.org/climateprotection/agreement.htm). More than 1,060 mayors representing nearly 90 million people in the U.S. have signed onto this Agreement, prompting a broad a broad range of local activities to curb carbon emissions from city operations and the community at large.

This report, Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in America's Cities, is the third in a series of reports this year; the two earlier reports featured energy efficiency initiatives and energy technology deployments by cities as well as how stimulus funds from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program helped accelerate the local energy and climate efforts.
