Univar's ChemCare And Systech Environmental Corporation Convert 1 Billion Pounds Of Chemical Waste Into Useable Fuel

Downers Grove, IL /PRNewswire/ - Univar Inc. (NYSE: UNVR), a leading global chemical distributor, announced today that it has reached a significant milestone in its sustainability efforts, shipping 1 Billion pounds of fuel-quality waste from its waste chemical business, ChemCare, to Systech Environmental Corporation, for reuse. The achievement is the result of a partnership between the two companies in environmental waste management that began more than a quarter-century ago.

Systech, a leading North American provider of byproduct co-processing services, uses the waste it receives from ChemCare to fuel kilns at its parent and affiliate cement manufacturing plants. The partnership between the two organizations began in 1989 and the cumulative shipment of 1 Billion pounds of waste over the last 27 years has replaced the equivalent of 500,000 tons of coal — which would generate enough power to supply roughly 80,000 homes with electricity for an entire year. Through this partnership, ChemCare and Systech have saved the mining and use of roughly 25,000 truckloads of coal and produced 2.0 million tons of cement — enough to pave a two-lane U.S. Interstate 2,200 miles long. The use of alternative fuels results in a 40 percent reduction of CO2 emissions over coal.

"Univar is committed to preserving and protecting the environment," said Tony Clark, vice president, ChemCare. "Reducing the impact of our customers' byproduct is an integral part of Univar's value proposition and sets us apart from our competitors. Our partnership with Systech is a shining example of two companies that are passionate about sustainability and work together to responsibly reduce the use of fossil fuels."

A subsidiary of cement producer LafargeHolcim, Systech Environmental Corporation primarily reuses waste byproducts by recovering energy or mineral content during the cement manufacturing process. Co-processing allows industries to divert otherwise unuseable waste to be used as an alternative fuel source to fire cement kilns in its processing plants.

"Systech has been reusing industrial waste as fuel and raw material in the cement industry for almost 40 years," added Shawn McMullen, chief operating officer, Systech. "Our partnership with Univar and ChemCare is the epitome of matching company assets & expertise with a mutual interest in sustainability to achieve this incredible milestone."
