SC Johnson Receives U.S. EPA 2014 SmartWay Excellence Award

Award Recipients are Top Program Performers and Leaders for Freight Supply Chain Efficiency

Racine, WI /PRNewswire/ - SC Johnson has been honored with a SmartWay® Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency. SC Johnson is one of 11 companies to receive this distinction in the shipper and logistics category. Each year, the SmartWay® Excellence Awards program recognizes approximately the top one percent of the EPA's more than 3,000 freight supply chain partners (representing an estimated 788,546 trucks).

Transportation accounts for almost one-third of total U.S. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and about two-thirds of U.S. petroleum-based fuel use*, according to the EPA. In addition, moving freight accounts for over 25 percent of all fuel consumed and GHGs emitted by the transportation sector**. The SmartWay® program works to positively impact these statistics. SC Johnson is a multiple-time award recipient, having also won SmartWay® Excellence Awards in 2012 and 2013.

Launched in 2004, SmartWay® is an EPA program that aims to accelerate advanced fuel efficient technologies and operational practices in the freight supply chain, while helping Partners save fuel, lower costs and reduce negative environmental impacts. As part of the SmartWay® program, SC Johnson achieved the following results:

• Consolidated Western Canada loads to increase truckload utilization and reduce trucks on the road
• Compiled truck utilization data and implemented monthly reviews across all modes to track freight managed by the company
• Piloted direct shipments from SC Johnson's largest global manufacturing facility in Mt. Pleasant, Wisconsin
• Expanded the co-ship project to include two incremental lanes on the west coast
• Increased scope of multi-stop to enhance truckload utilization and ultimately reduce trucks on the road
