Carrier End-Of-Life Refrigerant Management Program With EOS Climate Generates More Than 100,000 Metric Tons Of Verified Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions

Farmington, CT /PRNewswire/ - Just two years after Carrier entered into an agreement with EOS Climate, Inc. to ensure responsible end-of-life management of used refrigerants, the program has prevented 111,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to removing 23,000 passenger vehicles from the road for a year. Carrier, the world's leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

"This is a significant accomplishment that builds on a long history of innovative, natural leadership," said John Mandyck, chief sustainability officer, UTC Building & Industrial Systems. "Twenty years ago Carrier pioneered the phase-out of legacy refrigerants well in advance of U.S. and international requirements. While that decision set the standard moving forward, I'm proud that the company continued driving toward a more comprehensive solution that incorporates the responsible management of the refrigerants of our past."

For decades, the industry relied on chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants due to their energy efficiency, safety and economic benefits. In the 1970s and 1980s, scientists began to observe that CFCs contributed to the depletion of the Earth's stratospheric ozone layer that blocks harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Carrier introduced the first commercial and residential air conditioning systems using non-ozone depleting refrigerants two years ahead of U.S. regulatory requirements and 16 years ahead of developing country laws.

Through its relationship with EOS Climate, used CFC refrigerants and their resulting greenhouse gases are destroyed in compliance with standards established by the Climate Action Reserve and the California Air Resources Board. To date, the destroyed CFCs have resulted in an environmental benefit equal to the avoided CO2 emissions from over 15,000 homes' annual electricity usage while helping to restore the ozone layer and accelerating the transition to advanced, efficient technologies.

"EOS is excited about this milestone. We hope to build on our partnership with Carrier as we create innovative solutions to managing refrigerants across their lifecycle," said Matt Jones, CEO, EOS.  "These projects illustrate multiple wins - for facility and equipment owners, their customers, and most of all, for the environment."

The program is part of EOS Climate's Refrigerant Revolution™, a partnership of leading industry companies working to revolutionize end-of-life refrigerant management. Organizations have the opportunity to move above and beyond compliance requirements toward complete life-cycle management and demonstrate environmental and sustainability leadership.
