CT-121 Users Focused On Best Practices For Environmentally Sound Power Generation

Innovative Scrubber Technology is Being Applied to 38 Power Plant Units

Overland Park, KS - Major electric power providers recently discussed the ongoing installation of innovative air quality technology during the Third Annual CT-121™ Users Group Conference held recently near Wheeling, W.V.

More than 100 participants involved in 38 power plant units in North America currently installing CT-121 wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) technology, focused on construction, startup and commissioning best practices.

American Electric Power (AEP) hosted the event and provided participants with a tour of its wet FGD retrofit project currently underway on Units 1 and 2 at its Cardinal Power Plant in Brilliant, Ohio. Engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the project is being performed by Black & Veatch, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company.

"We at AEP were very pleased to have hosted this year's CT-121 Users Group Conference and to have had the opportunity to showcase the construction underway at Cardinal Plant," said Doug Shearn, Cardinal Plant Manager.

The CT-121 (scrubber) process, developed by Chiyoda Corporation of Japan, provides superior sulfur dioxide and particulate removal from flue gas with low operating costs for all fuel choices and operating levels of power plant units. This process provides sustainable environmental benefits for local communities. Black & Veatch is a North American licensee for this proprietary Chiyoda technology.

"There's a lot of excitement among the users regarding the very successful startup and full-scale operation of DP&L's Killen 2 scubber this past summer, and around the commissioning of more than a dozen additional CT-121 scrubbers over the next year," said Mark Amick, Associate Vice President of Black & Veatch. "The three conferences so far have been very successful in funneling this excitement into valuable information sharing between user professionals"

The conference attendees focused on networking, sharing information, best practices in operations and maintenance, and collaboratively solving technical operating challenges.

Doug Ritzenthaler, Engineer for AEP and member of the CT-121 users group's steering committee, said: "We are thrilled with the growing and significant participation that has been achieved in the conferences. The exchange of technical and operational experiences is a testimony to the value of a user-driven conference focused on the areas of greatest interest to the participants."

Southern Company, Chiyoda Corporation, AEP and Black & Veatch jointly planned and sponsored the conference.
