Thermo Fisher Scientific Redefines Sulfur Analysis With SOLA Flare

Sugar Land, TX - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. recently introduced the Thermo Scientific SOLA Flare, the latest addition to the company's renowned line of sulfur analyzers. Based on the Thermo Scientific SOLA II platform, the SOLA Flare is a total sulfur analyzer system specifically designed for online measurement and monitoring of flare feed gas, giving users the ability to pinpoint in real-time when an unscheduled flare event starts and when it ends for greater regulatory compliance.

Refineries and related facilities in California are now required to monitor flare vent gases for their total sulfur content under Rule 1118 of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). A Thermo Fisher customer requested the company propose a solution to measuring total sulfur in flare gas applications based on three important criteria: real-time response to rapid compositional changes in the flare feed gas; solution for potential sample condensation; and a required measuring range from 10 ppm/vol to 150,000 ppm/vol (15%). The SOLA Flare is a system comprised of two analyzers, with one analyzer used to measure the low range and one to measure the high range. Thermo Fisher Scientific introduced the SOLA Flare through a twelve-month pilot program in April 2006, and it has successfully demonstrated the product's ability to meet customers' requirements in a prominent west coast refinery.

"We have a strong track record for accuracy and precision in sulfur content monitoring and analysis, and the SOLA Flare will now ensure regulatory compliance for an even greater number of refining customers," said Clive Walker, product manager of Thermo Fisher Scientific. "Not only does our new analyzer monitor toxic emissions into the atmosphere, it also meets our customers' requirements for speed, reliability, a dynamic measurement range and challenging sample analysis."

Key features of the Thermo Scientific SOLA Flare include:

  • Online analysis: enables refineries and related facilities to minimize emissions penalties by accurately monitoring the duration of flare events
  • Real-time monitoring and analysis: allows customers to take immediate action and make corrections without lab analysis
  • Regulatory compliance: minimizes fines associated with releasing sulfur compounds into the atmosphere

The SOLA Flare is backed by thirty years of analyzer engineering expertise and Thermo Fisher Scientific's worldwide service and support network.
