Cornerstone And Eastern Research Group Awarded Contract To Support EPA Greenhouse Gas Reduction Program

Cornerstone Environmental Group, LLC announced that it has been awarded a five-year contract with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) landfill methane outreach program (LMOP), as a subcontractor to Eastern Research Group, Inc (ERG). The two firms have previously teamed together under the prior LMOP contract.

Working with the EPA's Office of Air and Radiation, Climate Change Division, ERG/Cornerstone will provide technical support for a wide variety of landfill program activities in the United States and internationally. ERG/Cornerstone will help EPA conduct feasibility assessments; review policies and analyze markets; support tracking and reporting programs; develop emissions inventory protocols; conduct training and outreach; support technology transfer and demonstration projects; as well as other greenhouse gas reduction activities.

"Over the past few years we have provided technical assistance to EPA on some significant landfill gas (LFG) issues and we look forward to providing technical assistance under the new contract." Cornerstone's tasks under the prior LMOP contract include revising sections of EPA's landfill gas energy project development handbook, revising the general LFG cost model, and evaluating whether beneficial use activities could be conducted at Superfund sites around the U.S.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that, when properly managed and captured, can be used to fuel power plants, manufacturing facilities, and vehicles, as well as produce electricity that can be used to provide power to homes. The EPA's program aims to reduce methane emissions from landfills by encouraging recovery and beneficial use of landfill gas as an energy source.
