Case Study: H2S Oxidation System For Sour Landfill Gas
By Merichem Chemicals & Refinery Services LLC, Gas Technology Products Division
A non-hazardous solid waste landfill in northwestern New Jersey successfully used construction and demolition (C&D) debris screenings as an alternative daily landfill cover for six years, until landfill gas sampling indicated excessively high H2S volumes. While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates an average of 35.5 parts per million by volume (ppmv) of H2S in landfill gas, the landfill experienced levels as high as 11,400 ppmv as a result of the decomposition of C&D debris screenings.
