A non-hazardous solid waste landfill in northwestern New Jersey successfully used construction and demolition (C&D) debris screenings as an alternative daily landfill cover for six years, until landfill gas sampling indicated excessively high H₂S volumes. While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates an average of 35.5 parts per million by volume (ppmv) of H₂S in landfill gas, the landfill experienced levels as high as 11,400 ppmv as a result of the decomposition of C&D debris screenings.
